Best Practices for Beer Line Cleaning

Brewers like to brew beer. Consumers like to drink beer the way the Brewmaster intended it to taste. It is a truism that the one point in cellar and bar management where there is the most mysticism and, frankly, false and fake information is when it comes to using beer line cleaners. We have, therefore, taken it as our mission at Draftec to set the record straight and to inform our customers of all the misinformation that, in the long run, can cause you more issues, impact negatively on the product being served (not as the brewmaster intended!), and leave very unhappy customers. In the science of customer complaints it has long been established that one unhappy customer can negatively affect 10-20 other potential customers. Therefore, since we are not only suppliers of cleaning systems, we are also comprised of brewers who have spent decades in the brewing industry and passionately care about beer. And, through long experience, we know that not all beer line cleaners are the same or have the same efficacy.

Some things to watch out for when cleaning beer lines:

  • The best beer line cleaners use the highest grade caustic soda (NaOH) and not other forms of caustic or other agents which are not as effective as caustic soda in cleaning beer lines.

  • The best line cleaners use the highest strength caustic soda which when diluted to the correct strength (2-3%) will easily clean those beer lines through proper circulation.

  • The best line cleaners contain an effective surfactant package consisting of surfactant, chelating, and wetting agents designed to clean the material comprising the beer line.

  • And the best line cleaners use the surfactant package as a balanced system within the caustic soda. It is not a cheap solution but when you care about beer quality, it is worth it.

  • We always like to say that “the secret is in the cellars”. This is where you will find the best beer as the Brewmaster intended. After the cellars and depending on how beer is treated, packaged, dispensed and served, it can deteriorate - why take the risk? Our Brewmasters are dedicated to inform and educate so that everyone has the opportunity of tasting great beer.

  • When you use a properly formulated beer line cleaner like Draftec you might be amazed at what comes out of that line! That (biofilm/beer stone) material might have been in the beer line for a long time, negatively affecting the taste of the beer! While we will always recommend moderate consumption, we surely want the beer consumer to taste a clean product at every quaff!

  • Beer lines should be cleaned at a frequency of every 2 weeks - anything less than that will risk the way the beer tastes - why risk it? Ask your Draftec representative for more details.
